Industrial applications of Stable Bleaching Powder and Quinoline

Stable Bleaching Powder is a chemical used in disinfecting as well as deodorizing purposes at homes as well as industries. In the manufacture of various chemicals, another primary compound is Quinoline and even this has several industrial applications. As bleaching agents, stable bleaching powder is very useful so it is widely used in cotton industries.

Chemicals and compounds are useful in making products that we generally use for various purposes. A chemical that we quite often use is the stable bleaching powder and it has numerous applications in our lives as disinfectants and sanitizers. Bleaching powder or Calcium Hypochlorite is manufactured using latest technology, under strict controlled conditions so that it works effectively. Similarly, Quinoline is another compound having a very pungent smell just like the bleaching powder and has huge industrial applications. Quinoline has a ring like structure and can be made from acrolein and aniline in the presence of heated sulfuric acid.

Uses of bleaching powder are known as it is widely used to treat bacteria infested places in our households. Not only for disinfecting areas like food processing and sugar industries, it is also used in carpet industries to bring shine on the carpets. There are simply endless uses of the Stable bleaching powder in industries like cotton yarn manufacture as they need it for bleaching cotton yarn and cloth. Even in hospitals and laundries it is used to remove stains as the powder is highly effective in this domain. De-odorizing the vicinity like swimming pools, residential areas and public places are among other application of stable bleaching powder apart from disinfection for food preservation.

Bleaching powder is an essential component in industries like paper and water treatment plants as it is a good disinfectant as already mentioned. Stable bleaching powder is smooth without any visible lumps or impurities and is essentially dry having moisture of about .3 percent. As the powder is free-flowing, it can be handled easily. Not just that, this makes the application uniform ensuring effective dissolution. When water is added to the bleaching powder, it decomposes ad chlorine is released that gives out the pungent smell just like Quinoline.

It was in 1834, that quinoline was extracted by Friedlieb Ferdinand Runge from coal tar and even now the chief source of the chemical remains coal tar, however synthesis of the Quinoline is possible using a number of methods. It is mainly used to prepare niacin and hydroxyquinoline sulfate along with the large scale production of dyes. In fact, this compound is used as a ‘building block’ to many chemicals. It is also used in the production of medicines for Malaria and few other diseases. As preservatives and fungicides the compound is peerless just like the stable bleaching powder having enormous uses in industries.
